Bogey, Birdy and Par – John’s Golf Day.

By |October 11th, 2016|

After 33 sports I was on the home straight, with the last, a favourite, golf. I have played the game on and off for about 10 years now, so I was confident I could complete the challenge though a full 18 holes, even with a buggy, is a stiff task. I was delighted that JohnsRoad2Rio […]

Wrestling in the Community

By |September 30th, 2016|

John’s Wrestling Challenge I have to admit to being trepidatious before this the 32nd of my 34 challenges. We found a club in Peterborough – sadly the nearest one to Cambridge, reflecting the unfair low regard in which the sport is held. This is an ancient sport, one of the few that have come from […]

2nd Annual Inclusive Badminton Festival

By |September 24th, 2016|

A fantastic day of Inclusive badminton. Wow, what a great day. Today Power2inspire hosted its second annual Inclusive Badminton Festival. With great support from CADMuS, the Cambridge Adult Disability Multi-Sport Club and The Cambridge University Sports Centre, the P2i team of Steve, katie and Anne welcomed players, both disabled and non-disabled, to take part […]

Photos on the Road2Rio By Rachel Garratt

I first began working with Power2Inspire as part of the team running the Power House Games programme taking inclusive sports to schools in Cambridgeshire and Essex. It was very interesting learning about inclusive and adapted sports for people of all ages and abilities and a pleasure to then teach […]

John’s Cycle Challenge

By |September 22nd, 2016|

Cycling with friends at the Lee Valley VeloPark.

I was really excited to try out my new tricycle on the Road Circuit at the Lee Valley VeloPark, the 31st of the 34 Road2Rio sports. Right beside the Velodrome – you have to go in to reception to gain access – it is a mile long, lit, […]

John gets to be a BiG SHOT!

By |September 19th, 2016|

John’s Rifle shooting Challenge.

I was invited by the Cambridge Shooting Association to complete my challenge with a match against Tom Holah at the Elizabeth Way road bridge range.

The first thing to note is the location of the range. Hidden away under the northern support of the bridge, thousands of residents, commuters and visitors pass […]

John’s Archery Challenge

By |September 19th, 2016|

A morning of Archery with the Cambridge University young Archers.

A scorching hot late summer’s day (in fact the hottest September day in 105 days), the beautiful grounds of a Cambridge college and enthusiastic young archers keen to help me try their sport: what’s not to like?

Jack, Lydia, dad and compound bow expert, Patrick, Rob and Maryia […]

Basketball – with coach Wendy

By |September 11th, 2016|

John’s Basketball Challenge.

Earlier this year pupils from across the county came together to play a range of sports at the Active Essex Winter School Games on Friday 22nd January 2016 at Harlow Leisurezone, Mark Hall Sport Centre and Norman Booth Centre.

The School Games is a programme which aims to motivate and inspire young people to […]

Athletics – Throwing the Hammer

By |September 8th, 2016|

For the athletics leg of JohnsRoad2Rio I chose to throw the hammer. England Athletics helpfully invited me to compete as a guest at their National Age Group Championships on August Bank Holiday Sunday at the International Athletics Stadium in Bedford. What a place and an event to debut.

I didn’t realise, when I selected the hammer […]

Sitting Volleyball at Parallel London

By |September 7th, 2016|

I was thrilled to be invited by Volleyball England to join them on their court at Parallel London 2016. This fabulously inclusive event took place for the first time at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (to give it, its full name), and alongside an inclusive run/walk/push there was a festival of inclusive activities.

Richard Stacey-Chapman, sitting volleyball development […]
