We love taking mainstream pupils into special schools for our Mixed Model Power House Games. Usually we take small groups – between 20 and 40 – and match them up with the students with special needs to learn the joys of playing sport together. The host school selects the students it considers most appropriate – this has varied from those with the least impairments to those with the most challenging behaviours and issues. The effects are profound: the students say they learn a great deal – not necessarily about the activities – usually about the challenges disabled people face and how these can be overcome.
These are some of the quotes from our visits:
“I just wanted to thank you all so much on behalf of Treetops School for last Friday. Our Students had a fantastic time and really did get so much out of it. Please pass on my regards to your teams, they were all fantastic.” (Head of PE at an SEN School).
“Can I just say a huge THANK YOU to you and your team? Our students had an amazing experience and its was a huge benefit to them all and to the staff. Truly inspirational.” (PE Staff member SEN School).
“Massive thank you for organising this afternoon! A wonderful experience that all students and staff enjoyed immensely.” (Head of Sport at “partnering mainstream” school).
“Thank you for a fantastic day of sport today, the students loved taking part in all the different activities! It was great fun and excellent to work with the [mainstream school] students”. (Head of Learning PE SEN School).
